Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive (TPED) 2010/35/EU - π (pi) Marking

(TPED) Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive - 2010/35/EU applies to manufacturers, authorised representatives, importers, distributors, operators and owners of certain types of transportable pressure equipment used for the transport of dangerous goods by road, rail and inland waterway.

Transportable pressure equipment is required to bear the Pi(π) marking to indicate compliance with the directive.

The TPED applies to:

  • cylinders
  • bundles of cylinders
  • tubes
  • pressure drums
  • cryogenic receptacles

It also covers tanks used for ADR (International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) Class 2 gases, for example:

  • demountable tanks
  • tank containers
  • tanks of tank vehicles
  • tanks of tank wagons
  • tanks of battery wagons and MEGCs (Multiple Element Gas Containers)

TYPE APPROVAL

Type approval is required for each new type of equipment according to ADR.

Scope of required type-approval documentation:

  1. identification data of the manufacturer (name, address, etc.),
  2. a list of standards and regulations according to which the equipment is designed, manufactured and inspected,
  3. the technical documentation to the extent necessary for the assessment of conformity containing eg .:
    1. a description of the prototype device, including planned design deviations and their special properties,
    2. data on the manufacturer of the chassis or wagon, resp. the frame manufacturer,
    3. welding machine certificates and approval of welding procedures in accordance with relevant regulations,
    4. description of the method of operation,
    5. list of dangerous substances or groups of dangerous substances or code of the tank to be carried in the installation with the highest vapor pressure at the reference temperature and the highest density substances at 15 ° C and 50 ° C or at the working temperature if higher and indicating the relevant values,
    6. drawing of the device showing the main dimensions,
    7. schematic drawing of piping systems,
    8. technical data of the equipment needed for the calculation,
    9. calculation if the thickness of the individual parts of the device was calculated using formulas,
    10. test program if the thickness of the parts of the device was determined by an experimental method,
    11. drawings necessary to verify the manufacture of the equipment, its accessories and mountings, including the assembly drawing and the BOM,
    12. drawing of the device designation (label, etc.),
    13. a list of operating accessories, including technical data,
    14. the suitability of insurance equipment, including performance calculations, if necessary,
    15. data indicating the values of the properties of the materials used in the manufacture of the equipment and accessories,
  4. approval data for the porous mass for equipment containing acetylene.
